ClickCAM: Exploring Router Power Performance Tradeoffs Using Click

چکیده
In this paper, we explore novel schemes for reducing power consumption in modern enterprise level routers and evaluate their effectiveness in terms of energy saved and impact on router performance. The largest consumers of power within routers are memory, the two biggest culprits being TCAMs and SRAM buffers. Our hardware mechanisms target the TCAM as a potential location to reduce power consumption. The TCAMs alone can account for up to 30% of overall energy draw, as they provide the router with a very high performance fully associative memory for finding the destination port for all incom-

Building a Power-Proportional Software Router
We aim at improving the power efficiency of network routers without compromising their performance. Using server-based software routers as our prototyping vehicle, we investigate the design of a router that consumes power in proportion to the rate of incoming traffic. We start with an empirical study of power consumption in current software routers, decomposing the total power consumption into ...
متن کاملPERFORMANCE COMPARISON BETWEEN THE CLICK MODULAR Router and the NetFPGA Router
1 It is possible to forward minimum-sized packets at rates of hundreds of Mbps using commodity hardware and Linux. We had a preference for the Click Modular Router platform due its flexibility and the fact that it claimed to have equal or higher performance than native forwarding if used with its polling drivers. Moreover, the NetFPGA is an open networking platform accelerator that enables rese...
متن کاملA framework for optimizing the cost and performance of next-generation IP routers
The explosive growth of Internet users, the increased user demand for bandwidth, and the declining cost of technology have all resulted in the emergence of new classes of high-speed distributed IP-router architectures with packet-forwarding rates on the order of gigabits, or even terabits, per second. This paper develops an analytical framework for modeling and analyzing the impact of technolog...
متن کاملFlexible Control of Parallelism in a Multiprocessor PC Router
SMP Click is a software router that provides both flexibility and high performance on stock multiprocessor PC hardware. It achieves high performance using device, buffer, and queue management techniques optimized for multiprocessor routing. It allows vendors or network administrators to configure the router in a way that indicates parallelizable packet processing tasks, and adaptively load-bala...
متن کاملImplementing Click IP Router Kernel on VLIW Architectures
In this work, we implemented the Click IP Router Kernel in C language provided by Scott Webber et al. for two VLIW processors designed for DSP purpose, namely the Philips Trimedia TM1300 processor and Texas Instrument TMS320C6701 processor. The performance of these processors are compared with those of three other processors, ARM SA-110, HPL-PD EPIC, and Intel IXP1200 [1]. Ways of further perfo...
